country, is a great man. First, the author contends that the founding father was not only a brilliant man with a lot of ideas, but a good military man to
boot. That is important. Also, he had a significant amount of political experience which is another asset as well. Above all, according to the author, Washington was a man of
conviction. He did not just endorse popular ideas that some presidents do today. Rather, he upheld and supported the ideas that he believed in. George Washingtons behavior and personality are
exemplified in Brookhisers work. One example is that Washingtons role in the 1794 Whiskey Rebellion is considered to be an important aspect when it comes to military decisions. The author
seems to suggest that Washingtons role here is paramount. What happened was that people who were protesting a tax on whiskey would get out of control. For example, they
would torch buildings and the government could not get the people to calm down and act civilly. Another president might have sat back and watched and simply tried to make
peace, or he might have allowed the country to fall apart. However, Washington realized the seriousness of the situation and rounded up a militia. The brilliance of this man is
exemplified in such simple matters as this, but his activity is based on character as well. The author also presents important influences in the shaping of Washingtons character and
ideas. Some of the explanation as to why Washington acted as he had seems to be tied to his own personal biography. He did not have a good relationship with
his father, and while married to Martha, had no children of his own. The pair raised two children, but they were Marthas alone, at least biologically. George was simply the
