of one woman during the Civil War. It is a story that offer the reader, perhaps, a fairly typical look at the life of those not actively involved in the
war, but those whose lives were clearly altered by the war. We, more often than not, hear of diaries concerning the civil war that involve men, primarily white men, though
we are also given slave narratives as well. But, for the most part, journals from women, women of education and social standing, who experienced the Civil War are perhaps few
and far between. With that in mind the following paper provides a summary of the work "Brokenburn: The Journal of Kate Stone" edited by John Q. Anderson. The
Journal of Kate Stone "In retrospect" begins the story, or the narration of Kate Stone. All other words prior to this are written by the editor, John Q. Anderson. In
this section Kate begins by looking back at her diary, stating, "In looking over the yellowing pages and faded writing of my old diary written in the troubled years from
1861 to 1865, how the old life comes back, the gay, busy life of the plantation at Brokenburn with Mamma, a beautiful, brilliant woman of thirty-seven at the head of
it all. Having been left a widow six years before with eight children and a heavily involved estate, she managed so well that she was now the owner of a
handsome property on which the crop of 1861 would pay off the last indebtedness" (3). She then discusses how her family was a busy one, with her brothers and
other children being a "handful" (3). She illustrates the people that lived with them, and illustrated some of the education they were all receiving. She illustrates a simple and pleasant
