printer drivers to install for proper operation. The digital telephone switches in central telephone offices are controlled by software specific to their operation, and the image of produced by
a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine is controlled in its display by software written only for that purpose. The word "software" carries connotation
for a broad range of activities, but for only one primary purpose: to coax from machinery the results that users need. Word processor, spreadsheet and database software seem
to be rather mild in comparison to more exotic activities such as space shuttle operation, but they are the ones commonly used and integral to todays everyday life.
Word Processor The word processor was one of the first applications of the personal computer. The
industry had been searching for an improvement over the old typewriter, which with the exception of becoming electric had not materially or substantially changed in nearly a century. Typewriter
companies made machines with digital displays that could be corrected before being committed to - and printed on - paper, and there were dedicated word processing machines that sought to
provide hybrid ground between the old typewriter and those new mainframe computer systems. The improvement the industry needed came with the advent of
