In order to explore the diversity of
views regarding British involvement in the war against terrorism, there are a number of salient factors which need to be taken into account. For example, in Britain as in many
other nations there is some difference of opinion as to the way in which terrorism itself can be defined. In general, the difference between conventional warfare and guerrilla or terrorist
tactics is something which is understood and accepted by most parties: however, strategies of attack which do not conform to the normal rules of engagement are more problematic.
In order to comprehend the motivation of terrorists, it is
sometimes necessary to look at the situation from a perspective other than the one which is the standpoint of the majority culture, and this is something which involves considering a
number of related issues such as the degree of influence which religious beliefs might have in terms of both the terrorists and their intended victims, as well as historical and
economic factors which may be relevant to the situation. For example, Britain has always had something of an ambivalent relationship with the concept of terrorism.
