major branch of opinion. Citing Arthur O. Lovejoy, Rene Wellek points out that "romanticism" as a term has come to mean "so many things that, by itself, it means nothing"
(181). Therefore, ultimately, romanticism is a term that has to be defined on an individual level of interpretation. The reader has to decide what it "romantic" from an individual point
of view. This writer/tutor (although the students is encouraged to think about his/her own interpretation) favors the "branch" of the romantic tree that favors seeing romanticism as a non-specific
term, that is, a term not limited to an age or epoch, but rather one that describes an approach to life that can be manifested at any time, by any
poet. In other words, as M.H. Abrams says, "Romanticism is no one thing" (315). Rather, the romantic spirit is a particular perspective on life, a viewpoint, that can be manifested
in innumerable ways, as each individual "romantic" will express this perspective as filtered his or her own sensibility. This definition of romanticism does not limit this quality in literature to
a specific time or age. While romanticism will be prominent in certain epochs, because in its essential characteristics it is a spirit, it can show itself "at all times, in
various degrees, in individual workmen and their work" (Pater 23). For example, Dr. Samuel Johnson is not usually thought of as being a part of the Romantic era in
