in 1742, desolated Gray and Wests presence haunts much of Grays verse (Abrams, et al, 1996). The majority of Grays poems are part of a literary reaction that arose against
the polish of Popes couplets (Abrams, et al, 1996). Poets such as Gray endeavored to create something different in their style, and tried to make their poetry both more intimate
and prophetic. Gray held that the "language of the age is never the language of poetry" (Abrams, et al, 1996, p. 1251). Consequently, Gray frequently employed such elements as
archaic diction and distorted syntax (Abrams, et al, 1996). One of his best known poems is Elergy Written in a Country Churchyard. This work combines "Latinate phrases" with "living
English speech," as well as "the learning of a scholar with a common humanity that everyone can share" (Abrams, et al, 1996), p. 1251). Samuel Johnson did not usually like
Grays verse, but even he had to admit that Elergy would live forever. Johnson wrote that "The Church yard abounds with images which find a mirror in every mind" (Abrams,
et al, 1996, p. 1251). Robert Burns Robert Burns was the eldest of seven children, the son of a hard-working farmer (Anonymous, 2002). His father encouraged his sons in
their education and consequently Burns was well-read despite his humble background. Burns is best known for his songs, such as "Flow Gently, Sweet Afton." Two collections, George Thomsons Selection Collection
