The War of 1812 is sometimes referred to as the second American Revolution. It was fought to once again relieve
ourselves of what we considered unjust British interference with U.S. affairs on the North American continent and on the seas. Great Britains interactions with Native American tribes was believed
to have inspired warlike behavior on the part of the tribes. Britains insistence on chasing down sailors that had escaped from British ships and sought refuge on American ships
was highly resented as well. Furthermore, because she was at war with France and did not want us trading with them, Britain had placed severe trade restrictions on American
shipments headed to France. Perhaps even more importantly, however, Great Britain was an obstacle to our westward expansion. There were many in
American government and among the populace as a whole that adamantly called for war. Representative Felix Grundy was one of those individuals. He explained in his Congressional address
that the reason we must go to war was because we could no longer subject our maritime rights to the "arbitrary and capricious rule" of British will (Bailey and Kennedy
