pertinent research has consistently indicated that none of those "smart players" have managed to approach Toys "R" Uss 21% share of the US toy market. In fact, the
nearest competitor, Wal-Mart, has barely half that. (Edreich, 1993). Paramus, New Jersey-based Toys "R" Us operates 581 toy superstores in the US, 217
Kids "R" Us childrens clothing stores in the US, and 234 toy stores overseas. With the US market saturated, the company is pinning its hopes for future growth on
aggressive expansion overseas. In 1993 it opened more stores outside the US than in it, including its first stores in Australia, Portugal, Belgium, Switzerland, and the Netherlands. The companys
operations in Japan are among the strongest of any US company there. In addition to corporate openings, Toys "R" Us has begun making franchise arrangements in other countries. (Edreich,
1993). The companys success overseas is due to both the popularity of things American and the fact that toys know no language. But the
company is not sitting idle at home. It is in the midst of an ambitious campaign (which includes closing some older, less profitable locations) to remodel stores and upgrade
service in order to make shopping more enjoyable. It is also establishing in-store specialty shops, such as the 160 Books "R" Us childrens bookstores it began opening in 1992.
