Though voices clamor for increased lighting and greater numbers of both city and campus police patrolling every corner of large campuses and the areas surrounding them, todays budgets are such that institutions are faced with reducing costs rather than increasing them, even for the good cause of increased safety. Crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED) offers an alternative and another layer of deterrence. Campus Events A senior in her final pre-med semester, the student body president and prestigious Morehead scholar, Eve Carson would be the very last person anyone could have expected to be found murdered on a residential street in a small college town. Eve would have graduated from the University of North Carolina in May 2008; instead she was murdered in March (Eve Carson Autopsy, 2008). An informant acquainted with the killer reported that Eves killer confided to him that he had killed a Duke University graduate student several weeks earlier (Eve Carson Autopsy, 2008). Duke University and UNC are less than ten miles apart; both students were killed in shadowy areas near campus but not directly under campus managements control.
