the networking environment is the focal point of this paper. INTERNETWORKING In order to further study the network layer as they are known today, one must focus on "network
layer service models, the routing algorithms that control the routes taken by packets through the network, and the protocols that embody these routing algorithms" (Whats inside a Router 2002, PG).
These topics, however, while important, are only the tip of the iceberg so to speak on what actually goes on inside the activities of routing systems. In order
to get a firmer grasp on the subject, consideration should be given to the switching function of a router - beginning with the actual transfer of datagrams from a routers
incoming links to the appropriate outgoing links (Whats inside a Router 2002, PG). Studying just the control and service aspects of the network layer would be more or less comparable
to studying only a faction of a company. This would, in effect, cover the so-called control of the company while performing very little of the actual labor involved in the
running of the organization. In order to fully understand the inner workings in other words, one must consider the workers as well. This analogy works well with computers.
In the network layer the real work, or in other words, the reason the network layer exists in the first place, is the forwarding of the datagrams. One
of the main issues in this forwarding process is the "transfer of a datagram from a routers incoming link to an outgoing link" (Whats inside a Router 2002, PG). The
