were severely damaged by the war. They were damaged physically, emotionally, and spiritually. They are, for the most part, incredibly dysfunctional men who are unsure of where they are going
and what their lives will bring. The three primary men who demonstrate such dysfunction are Jake, Robert, and Mike. All three of these men have one more thing in common.
They are all involved, at one point or another, with Brett, a woman who is ultimately as dysfunctional as the men. These men are all drawn to her and need
her, yet they find no hope or comfort in their relationship with Brett because she is just as lost as they are. The following paper examines this thesis.
Jake, Robert, Mike, and Brett Prior to discussing how Brett essentially further harms the men under examination, it should be noted that other relationships she engaged within did not prove
destructive to the men. These men were Bill and the Count and they were not damaged primarily because they possessed confidence in themselves and in their lives. They were not
obsessed with Brett and did not think that she could be the answer to their problems. As such she had little affect upon these men who were in control of
their lives and their emotions. However, she did have control over Jake, Robert, and Mike because they were lost, part of that lost generation that Hemingway often wrote about. And
Brett, being as lost as the men, truly fell into the destructive relationships, thrived on them, and even unconsciously looked for them. Brett is clearly one of those types
of women who seems to seek out men who need her. She thrives on that need and then quickly dismisses them for one reason or another. She feels wanted and
