been severely tested, if not destroyed, by the war. In this novel there is a character, Brett, who is arguably the depiction of a modern woman, a woman of the
1920s, but also a woman that perhaps even foreshadowed the independent woman of the latter part of the 20th century. The following paper examines this perspective. Brett as
Modern Woman: The Sun Also Rises As noted, Brett is a character in the novel who is very much a modern woman in many ways. She is perhaps a bit
neurotic and has many issues of her own, many of which are typically female, but at the same time she is strong, independent and something of a loose woman, especially
in her day and time. She was known to essentially move from one man to another, but at the same time was outwardly, and inwardly, incredibly independent in such endeavors.
According to one professor, "Several people have noted...that Brett might...be interpreted as a self-consciously ironic character, a new woman character who is perhaps not quite as thoroughly liberated from
conventions of gender as she, or Jake, thinks she is" (The Sun Also Rises (1926) Lecture Notes (Last Day of Discussion)). This falls well into the argument presented for, as
noted, there are elements of her personality that are still quite traditionally feminine, but she is still very much modern in relationship to her time period. This professor also notes
how "Jake signifies her as a modern woman early on when he describes her hair being brushed back like a boys, emphasizing her originality and authenticity as a modern woman
