of a human baby, as it protects against "infectious diseases, especially diarrhea and respiratory illness" ("Breastfeeding," 2008, p. 8). For the mother, the release of the hormone oxytocin has been
shown "to decrease blood pressure, anxiety and cortisol levels," while simultaneously increasing pain tolerance and promoting maternal bonding (Smith, 2007). Breastfeeding has been endorsed by every healthcare organization. Yet,
the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) felt compelled to revise its guidelines due to the fact that those guidelines had not prompted an increase in the incidence of breastfeeding. (Smith,
2007). The following literature review indicates the innumerable health benefits associated with breastfeeding, as well as the need to promote breastfeeding and provide support for this essential activity, which provides
a solid basis for lifetime health benefits and considerable healthcare savings. Health benefits of breastfeeding As mentioned above, medical research confirms that human milk is the "gold standard of
infant nutrition," as it protects babies from "the common cold, ear infections, diarrhea, bacterial meningitis, and allergies" in addition to conferring "lowered risk of sudden infant death syndrome, post-neonatal mortality,
asthma, cancer, diabetes, and childhood obesity" (Hurst, 2007, p. 207). Improved eyesight and children having higher intelligence has also been linked to breastfeeding (Hurst, 2007). For the mothers, breastfeeding has
been shown to provide protection against postpartum bleeding and it assist in post-pregnancy weight loss (Hurst, 2007). Over the long-term, breastfeeding is associated with a lower risk for "ovarian cancer,
