most appropriate and most advantageous nourishment. Many people choose to breastfeed, as that has proven to be the most advantageous form of feeding infants. But, there are also other considerations
to take into perspective, such as supplementing formulas, adding solid food, foods to avoid, and the special needs of a premature infant, who may take time catching up to the
average birth weight infant. In the following paper we discuss nutritional considerations for the first year of life, and then discuss breastfeeding and what has been researched concerning breastfeeding. The
paper finishes with a section on the nutritional needs, and special conditions, relating to the premature infant. Nutritional Considerations It is often recommended that during the first 4,
if not 6, months an infant get all of its nourishment from mothers milk. The first few days are of the utmost importance due to a substance known as colostrum.
Colostrum is not mothers milk perse, but is a substance that is filled with all of the nutrients a new infant needs, including components which provide anti-bodies for the infant.
According to one definition, colostrum is "The milk produced by mothers during the first days after their babies birth. Preterm colostrum has even greater amounts of the antibodies and other
infection-fighting substances that are present in all colostrum" (Meier, 2001; brfeed.html). It is considered to be the most important nutrient a mother can give their infant. In fact, even if
