1). Whether the decision to use formula rather than breast milk is prompted by convenience or the result of Western cultural reluctance to embrace the practice of breastfeeding, recent
statistics indicate that breastfeeding produces several benefits to mother, child and to society. These benefits are physical, economic and psychological, and demand consideration because of the significant developmental growth
breastfeeding promotes. In terms of infants, the latest epidemiological research indicates important advantages to breastfeeding, and particularly noteworthy are the reduced risk "of acute and chronic diseases" (Gartner and Black,
1997, p. 1035). According to 2002 published reports breastfeeding protects against such illnesses as infantile gastroenteritis, childhood cancers such as leukemia and lymphoma, asthma and severe respiratory ailments, Crohns
Disease, bacterial meningitis, insulin-dependent diabetes and eczema (Creighton, 2002; Murphy, 1999). There is also impressive evidence which indicates that breastfeeding infants can affect childhood obesity and positively affect cognitive
skills (Creighton, 2002). Statistics featured in a June 2002 article published in the British medical publication Lancet indicate that infant breastfeeding decreased obesity in three-year-old toddlers by 30 percent
or nearly one-third (Creighton, 2002, p. 1). These figures warrant serious attention in the United States, where the numbers of overweight children and teenagers has nearly doubled since 1980
(Creighton, 2002). In terms of cognitive development, there has been a notable boost in skill levels, particularly among infants with smaller birth weights, according to a research study released
