These include the patients reported date of last menstrual period, whether she has ever had any cysts or surgeries on her breasts and if she does regular self-examinations. If K.D. has conducted previous breast self-examinations, she can be asked whether she has ever felt anything or reported any masses she has felt. This information can help to inform the examination process. For example, if K.D. reported that she had a breast surgery to remove a benign mass a few years previously, this could inform the examination and help to identify potential reasons for the retraction. This information can be helpful in determining whether the retraction noted is caused by something other than the possible presence of a breast mass. The major concern here is that the retraction in the area of the tail of Spence in the axilla is the result of the presence of a breast mass. This does not necessarily mean that the breast mass is malignant, but it is not uncommon for breast masses that develop in this area to be malignant. Determining the presence of a breast mass is just the first step in diagnosis. Follow-up tests, including mammography, a needle-biopsy or an ultrasound may be utilized to determine the nature of the mass if one is discovered.
