incidence and research mean for nursing and patient care. Diagnosis Breast cancer is the development of malignant cells in the breast tissues associated
with milk production, in either the lobes of the breast or the ducts transferring milk from them to the nipple. Classification of type of breast cancer depends in part
on the location of the cancer. "Ductal carcinoma begins in the ducts" (Richard and McCartney, 2001; p. PG); lobular carcinoma involves the glands. Further classification distinguishes the tumors
ability to affect other areas of the body. In situ is an early stage in which the cancer has not developed the ability to affect other tissues. "Invasive"
is used for cancer that has progressed to the lymph nodes or metastasized "to other organ systems in the body and become systemic in nature" (Richard and McCartney, 2001; p.
PG). Cancer involving the ducts exists in several forms which collectively account for most breast cancer cases. These types are: * Ductal
carcinoma in situ (DCIS). This is also known as "intraductal carcinoma or non-invasive breast cancer" (Breast Cancer, 2004; p. PG). It accounts for about 20 percent of all
newly-diagnosed cases. * Invasive ductal cancer. This is the most common form of breast cancer, accounting for about 70 percent of cases. * Medullary carcinoma. Less common, this ductal cancer
