all over the world. Indeed, the institution of slavery is practically as old as the history of mankind itself. In the so-called "New World", however, slavery first began
in any large scale proportion with the arrival of the white intruders to that world. In Brazil, for example, slavery began in the mid-sixteenth century with the arrival of
the Portuguese to the region that would ultimately become known as Brazil. Slavery was a prominent institution in colonial times. Not only did it have an immediate impact
on Brazil, it also had a long term impact. Indeed, slavery shaped much of Brazil as we know it today. Brazilian slavery
did not differ much from slavery as it occurred elsewhere in the world. Slavery in Brazil began as did many human institutions out of greed. It is a
relict of a more powerful people dominating the less powerful. Most probably the first slave in human history was procured in war. Man had figured out that it
might be more profitable to keep an individual from an enemy encounter than to kill that individual. Almost all Middle East nations had slaves. The laws of Moses
acknowledge these slaves and dictate that Hebrew slaves must be kept in slavery only for a period of six years after which they were to be released. In Brazil,
of course, there was no time expiration in terms of slavery. A slave was a slave and, in most cases at least, they would always be a slave.
Interestingly, by approximately 1300 AD slavery had practically died out in Europe but by around 1400 AD the Portuguese began capturing and purchasing slaves
