Rainforests are some of the most ecologically diverse areas on the earth. These areas are vegetated by tropical
forests which support a large variety of plants and animals. They have distinctive and intricate hydrologies on which their delicate ecologies are based. Only approximately five percent of
the earths terrestrial surface is occupied by rainforests yet they are currently some of the most endangered habitats on earth (National Geographic Society, 1990). Brazilian rainforests are particularly
endangered. This endangerment comes from a variety of sources such as the expanding population of the country and activities such as clearcutting.
Brazilian rainforests habitats are closely tied to factors such as climate, topography and geology. Rainforests in Brazil are located primarily in the Amazon Region. Although this region is
the most sparsely populated in the country, tremendous impacts are being made on the rainforests habitats. Brazilian rainforests are replete with
thousands of different plants and animals which interrelate to form various interdependent communities. These rainforests contain thousands of species of plants and animals and are home to four hundred
distinct American Indian cultures (McDermott, 1998). Approximately one-half of the worlds terrestrial species of wildlife live in the rainforests as well (McDermott, 1998). Unfortunately, this tremendously diverse system
is in dire danger of significant environmental disruption. It has, in fact been identified as an environmental hotspot, an area which is in desperate need of world attention and
protection (Xinhua News Agency, 1998). Deforestation
