to a GDP per capita of $41,800, with 1% coming from agriculture, 20.7% from services industry and 78.3% from services (CIA, 2006). If we compare this to nearby Brazil,
where there have been many economic problems and the economy is still developing there is a different picture, Brazil is the 9th largest economy in the world according to the
World Trade Organisation, it has a GDP in 2005 of $1.556 trillion and a growth rate of 2.4% however the GDP per capita only works out at $8,400 (CIA, 2006).
This indicates that the country is a lot poorer and has a great deal more potential for development that the US. The make up of the GDP reflects the developing
status where 10% of the GDP comes from agriculture, 39.4% from industry and 50.6% from services (CIA, 2006). There is higher unemployment in Brazil, at 9.9% compares with 5.1% in
the US and there are also more people living under the poverty line compared with the US this was 22% in Brazil and 12% in the US (CIA, 2006) If
we look at the development of the GDP then there have been some notable shifts over the last twenty years. These are shown in table 1 Table 1 GDP for
