Weber have had a lot to say about the work force, bureaucracy, and capitalism. Harry Bravermans work on the subject of labor was first published in 1974. It draws
a great deal on Karl Marxs alienation theory and positions the ordinary worker as a cog in a machine. Braverman writes about all of this in his Labor and Monopoly
Capital but unlike Marx, his perspective is thoroughly modern. That is, one can say that things have changed a century later. An overview of the book is appropriate
before a critique of the content. Bravermans work has been criticized by many, but the book has been noted as being an important contribution to the field of sociology.
The full title Labor and Monopoly Capital : The Degradation of Work in the Twentieth Century certainly tells where the author stands. He is fundamentally a Marxist.
Braverman focuses on Taylorism and also contends that industrialization has displaced capitalism. The author also explains that Taylorism has all but evaporated. Still, he clarifies the reason for the short
duration of Taylorism; it has passed by as it was merely a single stage in history. Taylorism was a theory created shortly after the turn of the twentieth century where
it was presumed, by Frederick Taylor, that the atomization of factories should be closely monitored. In other words, management was key to production. But Braverman talks about Taylorism from a
perspective later in the century. Nevertheless, he uses some of the premises in support of his own arguments. While one might link Braverman with Marx or Taylor, this author
