not unlike the involvement of many others, although he did maintain a character that has led him to possess the name of Braveheart. In the Mel Gibson movie concerning the life of William Wallace we see, as we often do, alterations to historical accuracy for the sake of audience appeal. The historical information regarding Wallace is quite different than the story we see on screen. These changes have been made, as mentioned, for audience appeal as the director and writer strive to gain the sympathies of the audience in terms of passion, emotion, and patriotism. In the following paper we examine some of the facts and some of the fiction which offers us a film that, while based on a real individual, is altered to obtain our sympathies and our empathy. Braveheart It should perhaps be first noted that "Not much is known about Wallace, known as Braveheart, except that according to an old epic poem, he unified the clans of Scotland and won famous battles against the English before being captured, tortured and executed as a traitor" (Ebert, 1995; 980742.html). This, however, is the foundation for the passion of the film, and with information regarding other historical figures we are given the story of "Braveheart" starring Mel Gibson. From a simple understanding of history and the constant struggle between Scotland and England, as Scotland fought to remain separate from English rule, we can envision, as the director and the writer did, many fictional qualities that would speak to our hearts and our passions. One is obviously the pacifistic nature of Wallace when he returns to the village of his youth. In reality Wallace was perhaps already fighting for the cause against the English and his love of a woman had nothing to do with his actions ...
