Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 4 page paper that discusses the development of the brain during the prenatal period and in infancy. Scientists have shown the brain begins to develop almost at the same time as conception; it develops rapidly during pregnancy as well as during infancy. The paper discusses cell/neuron development and how connections are developed and strengthened. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

movement" (BrainWonders, 2001; also see The Burch School of Music, 2007). Even the senses are beginning, such as taste and smell (BrainWonders, 2001). When the infant is born, it will
have about 100 billion neurons, also referred to as brain cells (BrainWonders, 2001). This number will soar to 1000 trillion connections by the time the child is three years old
(The Burch School of Music, 2007). This degree of density begins to lessen when the child reaches about the age of eleven (The Burch School of Music, 2007). The brain
simply gets rid of connections it doesnt need (The Burch School of Music, 2007). The brain keeps the connections that are needed for survival and that have been used the
most often (The Burch School of Music, 2007). This is why repeated experiences of essential learning is so important in the early years of development. Even with this large number
of brain cells already developed, the brain is not completely developed when the infant is born (BrainWonders, 2001). Important developmental phases after birth include strengthening the connections between neurons (BrainWonders,
2001). These connections are essential for learning and even in the first months of the infants birth, the infants experiences will have an impact on how these cells actually connect
to each other (BrainWonders, 2001). The connections are best described as electrical impulses that move down the nerve cell and that go from one cell to another (The Burch School
of Music, 2007). They do this with the help of certain chemicals, such as serotonin (The Burch School of Music, 2007). The more often the network of neurons is activated,
the stronger the connections between them will become (The Burch School of Music, 2007). This author reports: "a single cell can connect with as many as 15,000 other cells" (The
