suggests the term may have been spurred by doctors performing organ transplants due to the criteria needed for success. In most of Western societies, bran death means the whole brain
is dead, which means the brain stem is dead. Theoretically, that means that not one cell in the brain can be active and alive. Blank reports that the brain regulates
and integrates all of the systems needed for the person to function, including being conscious. If the brain dies, all these other functions end also although many can be kept
functioning using artificial means, i.e., technology. The most basic of questions related to the definition of death is the question of what it means to be human. As Blank discussed,
life incorporates a vast array of characteristics that include cognition, social activities, intelligent or cognitive functioning and emotional functioning. This has led some to oppose the whole notion of brain
death while others oppose the notion of whole brain death as the determinant for death. Still others feel challenged by the issues brought about by technology, e.g., keeping the body
alive while the brain is dead. These issues have fueled the controversy about the definition of brain dead. Blank cites Truog who argued that the whole brain death concept is
flawed and inherently contradictory. This seems accurate to this writer. There will always be inconsistencies and there will never be a consensus decision as to what constitutes brain death. There
is a group who believe that the definition and understanding of whole brain death is not as inclusive as it needs to be. There is an inherent contradiction because
the cerebral cortex controls mental functioning and consciousness and the brain stem controls various somatic functions. The brain stem can continue living after the neo-cortex has died, which means the
