This paper discusses what a 2000 ruling in California may mean to the organization. Discussion The Boy Scouts have gone on record as being "anti-gay" and are paying the price for their discriminatory attitude. The Los Angeles United School District (LAUSD) "want to limit Boy Scouts activity on campuses and require troops to sign statements renouncing the organizations anti-gay stance" (Sheppard, 2000). Others have sought ways to impose sanctions on the scouts, "including preventing them from using schools to recruit new members" saying that the school board cannot support any organization that is discriminatory in its policies(Sheppard, 2000). The Scouts responded that their policies are not discriminatory; that they dont ask for sexual orientation on their application forms, nor do they "permit talk of sexuality - whether homosexual or heterosexual" (Sheppard, 2000). A spokesman for the Scouts said that he was sure there were gay leaders and gay Scouts, but unless they were open about it, the organization wasnt going to make a public issue of it: "If theyre not making it a public issue or wearing that on their sleeve, Im sure theyre providing a solid role model for young people" (Sheppard, 2000). Across the country, various cities have ended their programs with the Scouts: the "Los Angeles City Council asked all city departments to review their relationships with the Scouts, while the Police Commission is threatening to eliminate the Police Explorer program unless it severs ties with the Scouts" (Sheppard, 2000). The New York City schools also ended its relationship with the Scouts "except to allow the organization to use schools after hours" (Sheppard, 2000).
