who other people are, and reciprocally other peoples understanding of themselves and other" (Jenkins, 1999). If we look at many theorist, including Bourdieu there are idea of the way
in which social and cultural capital form our identities. This definition of identity is applicable to most theorists and is a good starting point for study of the way
identity may be seen through the work of Bourdieu with these ideas of social capital and cultural capital which crosses over. Social capital is the framework for the learning processes
is a society that take place as a result of interaction and the creation and utilisation of networks, horizontally and vertically. The way learning takes place is influences in
many ways, and helped development of identity when we see ourselves within the larger community as a result of interactions which start with education. We cannot escape for the idea
of cultural capital as it is this that social capital is supporting. It is interesting to note that in the ideas of
culture and individual identity Bourdieu does not claim that the higher the social class the better the culture, therefore an upper class culture is not superior to that of working
class cultures, only different. Failures that are classified as class related, such as higher crime rates associated with working class cultures, is not the result of culture, but the failures
of the educational system which is prone to reflect whatever the dominant social classes are with an inherent bias. These are invariably the higher classes with the higher levels of
economic capital and associated power. Cultural reproduction may be seen as the main goal of the educational system and as such impacting on the sense of identity (Bourdieu, 1974).
