organizations operate in that environment. The factor that separates the group from the wider environment may be seen as a boundary, defining what is and is not true or accurate.
These may be formal, informal or social boundaries and when looking at leadership and the commercial environment the concept of the barriers becomes important as there will be different approaches
and considerations when managing internal and external issues and the way that communication across different boundaries is managed. Ancona and Caldwell, (1989), see boundary management as the management of
the way teams interact with other teams and the organisation. This may be lateral communications or vertical communication between different departments or throughout the corporate hierarchy. Agrell and Gustafson look
at boundary managers and define them as guarding "the boundaries of the group, and enable the group to work effectively without organisational distractions" (quoted in West, 1996).
However they also note, in line with Ancona and Caldwell, that the groups or teams need to communicate with other groups, or they will
not be able to operate effectively or efficiently, a role of the leader is to may help to facilitate or guide this process, it may also be to limit the
unhelpful bureaucratic influences that may be present to reduce distractions or manage and reduce interfering processes (West, 1996). Overall, boundary management may
be described as the entire range of communication that takes place from the internal team environment to the external environment which may cross several boundaries. The way that these boundaries
