muscle-paralyzing disease caused by a toxin made by a bacterium called Clostridium botulinum" ()CDC, 2008). This bacteria is found in soil (MedlinePlus, 2008). The following paper offers an overview of
botulism. Botulism As mentioned there is the botulism that is contracted through food but this is only one of three forms of botulism. With foodborne botulism the disease
"occurs when a person ingests pre-formed toxin that leads to illness within a few hours to days. Foodborne botulism is a public health emergency because the contaminated food may still
be available to other persons besides the patient" (CDC, 2008). Then there is infant botulism which happens to a very small number of infants (CDC, 2008). This disease occurs in
those infants who posses the bacteria in their intestinal tract (CDC, 2008). One author notes that this happens in infants who consume the spores of this particular bacteria which normally
occurs from ingesting honey (MedlinePlus, 2008). The third form of botulism is wound botulism which "occurs when wounds are infected with C. botulinum that secretes the toxin" (CDC, 2008).
In more intricate detail of the bacteria, it appears as though, according to one author, there are actually seven forms of botulism: "There are seven recognized types of botulism. Four
of these (types A, B, E and rarely F) cause human botulism. Types C, D and E cause illness in mammals, birds and fish. The sporulated form of the bacterium
is commonly found in soils, aquatic sediments and fish. The spores are heat-resistant. Under anaerobic conditions, botulinum spores can germinate, and the bacterium grow and produce the toxin" (World Health
Organization, 2008). Most agree that it is a relatively rare disease but it is also a potentially lethal disease that impacts the nervous system. It appears as though approximately
