has many uses, though the most widely recognized is that which aims at reducing facial lines and wrinkles. "Known as the "pretty poison," Botox is derived from the neurotoxin that causes botulism, a severe and potentially fatal form of food poisoning. Used in extremely diluted form, Botox reduces wrinkles by temporarily blocking the nerves that signal facial muscles to contract, causing wrinkles" (Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News ITEM02106000). With this in mind the following paper examines the history of botox, discusses its use to reduce wrinkles, its use for other conditions, and the side effects of the drug. The History and General Overview "The cosmetic use of Botox, or botulinum toxin type A, may just be the most influential Canadian medical discovery since insulin. For decades, the anaerobic bacterium Clostridium botulinum was one of mankinds deadliest enemies, randomly killing consumers of improperly canned food" (Cosh NA). It is perhaps better known as botulism, and it has been responsible for "Paralyzing muscles by attacking the nerves leading to them, botulinum poison remains the strongest known: Allergan sells it in amounts on the order of one-billionth of a gram. But by the 1980s it had come to be a valuable weapon against involuntary muscle spasms in the eye, like blepharospasm or strabismus, which leave sufferers prone to sporadic attacks of blindness" (Cosh NA).
