Discussion The information for this paper comes from an extremely useful series of books called "Opposing Viewpoints," which can be accessed on line via various library databases. The series gathers essays on a number of controversial subjects and presents them so that people can read about both sides of an issue. The two essays considered here are "Stronger Gun Control Laws Will Not Reduce Crime" by Linda Gorman and David B. Kopel; and "Gun Control Laws Can Reduce the Incidence of Violent Crimes," by Abigail A. Kohn. First, it should probably be stated that the paper is limited in scope: there are any number of side issues we might consider, such as whether or not people should be allowed to have guns for hunting; for skeet shooting; for pistol/rifle range competitions and so on. But we will consider only this: the idea that guns need to be controlled in order to reduce the crime rate. First up are Gorman and Kopel, who argue that strengthening gun control laws will not reduce the crime rate. They note that the ownership of firearms is subject to "two competing philosophies" (Gorman and Kopel). In countries like the U.S. and other democracies that derive their power from the "consent of the governed ... guns have been relatively lightly regulated and are owned by sizeable segments of the population" (Gorman and Kopel). In countries in which power is held by a central authority, "private firearms are subject to strict control or banned entirely" (Gorman and Kopel).
