produced a much improved environment for all who live, work and visit there -- while at the same time giving Boston the dubious designation of being callous toward the working
class. The Campaign to Protect Chinatown (CPC) was implemented as a means by which to "strengthen the voice of ordinary Chinatown residents in order to unite and lead the broader
community in determining Chinatowns future. In order to secure this objective, all members of Bostons Chinatown had to be considered, including the local working class population and the visitors
who come to partake of an entirely different cultural existence. Several issues were in dire need of addressing, not the least of which were pertaining to inadequate housing, eroded
land base, gridlock traffic and the detrimental impact of overdevelopment. At its core, the CPCs primary mission was to: * preserve the working class, family neighborhood * unite
residents and ordinary community members around a vision for Chinatowns future * build residents grassroots organizing capacity and political mechanisms to change the communitys balance of power * develop new
community leadership which stands for the interests of the majority * organize for greater community control of development and for Chinatowns growth * educate and organize residents for a healthy
urban environment (Campaign to Protect Chinatown ). A number of resources have been mobilized in order to reach these goals, including an adult education program, Chinese Youth Initiative, Community
