times of revolution and as such stands as one of the oldest and most important cities in the nation. However, the history of Boston from the late 1800s to the
1960s was a time that seemed to leave Boston as a power city in relationship to making change, or truly demonstrating change in the nation. During these years it appears
as though Boston achieved a unique position for itself while also truly melding into mainstream America without really standing out as any truly revolutionary city, or forward thinking city. The
following paper examines various elements and events in history from 1877 to 1960 as it relates to Boston, uncovering, in the process, how Boston evolved through almost a century of
American change. Boston: 1877-1960 The student asks what the effect of social and national elements such as railroads, immigration, unions and urban living had in relationship to Boston.
For the most part one could well argue that Boston was as influenced and altered by these things as any other city in the nation during the time period of
1877 to 1914. In relationship to the railroad, the railroad actually had an impact earlier in Boston than 1877. For example, the Boston and Maine Railroad was one of
the most powerful in the area in the early part of railway history. It is noted that, "The B&M came under the control of J.P. Morgan and the New York,
New Haven and Hartford Railroad about 1910, but shortly thereafter anti-trust forces wrested effective control away from New Haven."1 It seems that part of this acquisition was due to debt
incurred by the railroad in the 1870s which had led the railroad company "into a festering financial crisis that was settled by a reorganization of the road in 1919. Several
