"best short fiction was written within a period of only two to three years, and therefore it may seem futile to speak of his development" (Scherr). Nearly all the work
he is best known for deal with his experiences in the camps, and "they are alike in expressing despair, a sense of being caught up in a world that has
lost meaning, and a concern with what it means to continue living in such a world" (Scherr). It may be that he could no longer find it within himself to
live in a world where such things as the Holocaust could happen, and that is why he took his life; well never know. The story This Way for the Gas
and the other stories that are based on his experiences in Auschwitz reveal that man is capable of doing the most despicable and barbarous things to other human begins in
order to survive. In one instance, which Scherr calls the "most searing moment," a young woman runs away from her child, because she knows that if the Nazis find out
shes a mother, she and the toddler will be gassed together (Scherr). The child is stumbling after her, arms out, crying "mamma, mamma" (Scherr). We can understand her desperate desire
to live, but we also ask what kind of mother would run rather than trying to protect her youngster. Then, a Russian prisoner who is helping to unload the transport
"knocks the woman off her feet, swears foully at her, and heaves first her and then her child onto one of the trucks going to the gas chambers. The SS
