to fight for ones country is the best honor one could possess. In another work, John Updikes A&P, the reader is presented with a young man who sees a chance
to change his life and move in a noble and less than average direction. The following paper examines the young Ron, in Kovics book, and Sammy from Updikes work, comparing
and contrasting and indicating how the character of Sammy is one that serves as a better example for young people and how they should live their lives. .
Born on the Fourth and A&P First and foremost, it could well be argued that Ron, in having made poor choices and suffering and thus living the consequences of his
poor choices, stands as a better example. This is because his experience shows the youth how they should not, simply and blindly, believe what they are told and his experiences
and physical sufferings could well be an example for them. But, the assignment is to identify which man serves as an example of how one should live their life and
Ron ultimately serves as an example of how young people "should not" live their lives. Ron essentially tells people they do not want to live as he does, or did.
As such the paper focuses on Sammy providing a better example. In Kovics work the reader clearly gets the opportunity to truly delve into the character of Ron over
many years, as opposed to Updikes work which only speaks of one day in the life of this young man. But, in both the reader gets a very strong sense
