personality disorder (BPD). Alexs obsession, her social separation and the duality to her personality appear as central functions of the film, and understanding both the film and the progression
of borderline personality disorder are valuable in understanding the impacts of the film in general. The plot of this film is rather simple in comparison to the complexities of
the characters and the way in which their interaction sparks both positive and negative emotional responses. Dan Gallagher, a successful business man who also has a wife, becomes somewhat
disillusioned and seeks the companionship of an interesting woman he has met through his work. After a passionate and brief affair with Alex Forrest, Gallagher realizes that he must
not continue the affair and makes efforts to put an end to it. Initially, these elements, though integral to the story as a whole, do not reflect substantial issues.
Alexs behaviors appear sometimes dramatic and also reflect a high degree of early attachment to Gallagher, but these are of little immediate concern until Gallagher beings the process of
ending the relationship. Alexs reactions demonstrate her conflicted nature and the truly ingrained Borderline Personality Disorder that is prevalent to her psychosocial perspective. Rather than acting like
an adult and mourning the loss of her relationship, Alex places much of her self-identity into her role in the relationship, and the loss of this role determines problems with
her stability and functioning. For example, her significant mood swings, the ups and downs that trigger rejection from her lover, suggest some problems with her perspective. In addition,
Alex also regresses and sometimes appears very childlike in her response. Other factors, like threats of suicide, manipulative behaviors, and a general sense of her impulsivity, are all factors
