Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) defines borderline personality disorder (BPD) by listing nine diagnostic criteria, which can be categorized under four general subheadings: Interpersonal hypersensitivity, Affective dysregulation, Impulsivity and Other factors (Gunderson,
2011). The following overview of BPD describes the diagnosis and treatment of the disorder, including both psychological and pharmacological modes of therapy. As the emotional toil of BPD on lives
is quite severe, and may prove fatal in the case of suicide victims, it is important to recognize and treat BPD promptly. BPD has many similarities to major depressive
disorder (MDD). Due to this overlap in characteristics, many scholars have questioned if BPD is a distinct disorder or an atypical expression of MDD (Goodman, et al., 2010). In response
to this issue, Goodman and her colleagues (2010) argue persuasively that BPD is a distinct disorder that involves emotional dysregulation. Furthermore, these researchers assert that the impulsivity and interpersonal sensitivity
that is characteristics of BPD distinguish it from MDD (Goodman, et al., 2010). Research suggests that there is a genetic component in the development of BPD suggesting that the disorder
is highly inheritable (Kendler, Myers and Reichborn-Kjennerud, 2011). The DSM-IV indicates that BPD is much more prevalent in women than men. However, the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related
Conditions found BPD to occur at the same rates among both women and men (Sansone and Sansone, 2011). The incidence of BPD in the general population is around 6
