that approximately 2 percent of adults, primarily women, suffer from BPD, accounting for approximately 1/5 of all psychiatric in-patient services (NIMH, 2005). BPD was first included in the Diagnostic
and Statistical Manual of the American Psychiatric Association (DSM) in 1980, which makes it a relatively new category of mental disorder (Oldham, 2004). Researchers have argued that it
is a mental disorder, which is falls somewhere between a psychotic and neurotic mental disorder, making it difficult to diagnose and treat (Oldham, 2004). The DSM-IV-TR (2000) describes
BPD as "a heterogeneous construct that includes patients on the mood disorder spectrum and the impulsivity spectrum" which separates it from schizophrenia, thereby reducing comparisons between the two (DSM-IV-TR, 2000,
code 301.83). One of the most significant issues related to BPD is the high prevalence of self-injury related to the condition. It is not uncommon for people
with BPD to be self-injurious, either through direct behaviors or through substance abuse, and a high rate of attempted suicide or suicide in this population (NIMH, 2005). Interventions often
require a combination of therapeutic approaches that may include behavior modification plans, psychoanalysis and even the use of pharmacological interventions. In understanding the scope of the problem of borderline
personality disorder, it is necessary to identify the major elements, including the etiology of the disease, the symptoms, the rates of occurrence in different populations, the potential factors relating to
