People of various generations will hold certain attitudinal positions that differ from that of their parents. Interestingly, generations span many years. An older boomer for example, may be looking forward to retirement but a boomer born at the tail end of the those years may be married to an Xer and in fact more like the younger generation than his once hippie peers. Kantrowitz (2000) defines the baby boomer generation as those who were born roughly between 1946 and 1964. Today, that would translate to those people who are between the ages of 36 and 54. However, it is important to note that the younger boomers often feel caught between generations. Those who are between the ages of 35 and 40 now are sometimes referred to as Tweeners (Stone, 1996). They started school in the 1960s, and came of age in the 1970s, not leaving school until the 1980s (1996). Generation X on the other hand is that younger, working crowd which is approximately from the age of 18 through 35. Anything younger would be categorized on the newly evolving Generation Y. In embracing Gen-Xers into the work world, the older Generation is obviously threaten. Society places a high value on youth, assuming their ideas are fresh and their bodies are able to function better. It is also assumed that they can be molded and can work for less. That is why there are age discrimination lawsuits in the workplace. However, although there is some threat, that does not significantly hinder the welcoming of this new generation. Still, changes in current management style is often necessary to recruit and retain employees who are categorized as Gen Xers. ...
