type of writing. Discussion The first book is Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott ODell. Its set on an island off the California coast in the mid-1800s and is
based on a true story. The main characters are a young woman known as Karana and her brother Ramo. One day a ship comes to the island with a band
of Aleut hunters on board. The siblings father Chowig, chief of their tribe, agrees to let the Aleuts hunt if they will pay for the privilege and they agree, but
when the hunt is over and the islanders ask for payment, the Aleuts refuse. There is a fight and many islanders, including Chowig, are killed. The new chief, Kimki, after
a long and depressing winter, decides the best course is to leave the island, and sets off to make arrangements. After a long time he returns in a ship and
urges everyone to leave quickly because the weather is bad. Karana sees Ramo still on the beach and jumps overboard to swim back to him, thus missing the ship. The
two are left alone on the island. One morning Ramo is killed by the islands wild dogs, leaving Karana completely on her own. She builds a strong house for herself
and makes weapons, and lives alone for 18 years. During that time she hunts down the dogs that killed Ramo with the idea of revenge. She succeeds in severely wounding
the packs leader, but then nurses him back to health and the two bond. One day the Aleuts return and Karana hides but is discovered by a girl, whom she
befriends, though not until she has worked through her distrust of the hunters. They become close friends, but when the Aleuts leave, the girl Tutok goes with them, leaving Karana
