to offer general guidelines for book selection. These guidelines have been used in evaluating the following ten books as biased or unbiased. Ahlberg, Janet and Allen: Jeremiah in the Dark Woods (1999)-This story is unbiased, and this evaluation is based on the fact that the authors announce with the first sentence that is a fairy tale. It begins with the fairy tale introductory formula, "Once upon a time..." and then proceeds to a fanciful list of famous characters from fairy tales and childrens stories, "three bears, severe dwarfs, five gorillas, a frog prince..." (Ahlberg and Ahlberg 1). Furthermore, the hero, Jeremiah Obadiah Jackenory Jones, lives with his grandmother in a gingerbread house. It is fanciful, delightful, and unbiased. Alcott, Louisa May: Little Men (2010): Written and published in the late nineteenth century, Little Men reflects the Victorian sensibilities and cultural ethos. However, it is also reflects what was for the time a radical feminism, as Jo March, one of the characters from Alcotts Little Women is a successful educator and career woman, as well as a "dutiful and supportive wife," fulfilling the societal expectations for women during Alcotts era (Hunt 28). The book is biased in that it adheres to this ethos, but also unbiased in that it offers a more liberating paradigm for women. Ardizzone, Edward: Little Tim and the Brave Sea Captain (1936)-This is a story about a little boy who falls in love with the sea and resolves to run away from home and go to sea if he gets the chance. He does and has a great adventure. However, the story is biased, in that it follows the standard formula of presenting only males as having adventurous, exciting lives.
