innovators and visionaries" (Drucker, 2010). However, despite its current prevalence and development, a single, concise definition of the term "artists book" continues to be elusive and problematic (Drucker, 2010).
An artists book is a "book created as an original work of art," which integrates how it is produced "with its thematic and aesthetic issues" (Drucker, 2010). However, Drucker goes
on to point out that this definition raises more questions than it answers, as it entails defining what constitutes an original work of art, as well as if there are
restrictions to the form of the book i.e., "Is a book restricted to the codex form? Does it include scrolls? Tablets? Deck of cards?" (Drucker, 2010). The scope of this
art genre is expansive, as artists books include "every artistic medium and method of bookmaking," as well as every subject from food and family to politics and poetry, familiar tales
to wild fantasy" (Larson, 2007, p. 9). Klima (1998) indicates that the term "artists books" first appeared in 1973 with the Artists Books exhibition. Klima adopts the spelling
artists book, that is, with no apostrophe, due to this initial usage of the term. As of 1998, there have been over 300 exhibitions and 700 published works on this
artistic genre (Klima, 1998). However, Klima, citing Dick Higgins in 1985, argues that there has been deficit of really good critical commentary on this art form because "Most of our
