Americans did not leave sooner. There would be no real end or compromise to this bloody war and much was lost for seemingly no reason. Others chalk it up to
poor judgment and a frenzy that emerged due to cold war fears, but whatever the reason for Vietnam it is still a significant subject of contemplation in respect to the
military as well as to society at large. The Vietnam War created a generation of radicals. Suddenly, there was no rhyme or reason to life and everything seemed to be
in chaos. The drug epidemic would emerge and suddenly, the government was not to be trusted. Appy (2004) and Young (1991) have each written accounts of this war and tried
to document not only the body counts, but what occurred at each step and why. They would also each capture the aura of an era, and a time that no
one will forget. Yet, each of their takes on the events are quite different and while by and large objective, each volume provides a sense of the authors experience. Young
(1991) provides a fair account of the Vietnam War in her work on the subject. She does not focus on one side, but rather gives the reader the big picture
in respect to what was occurring on either side and how the people felt about what was going on. It is a rather vivid account and while it tries to
be objective, and provide factual data, there is a sense that much of the authors opinion is interjected. Yet, it is a compelling work and one that can be considered
among the most accurate and interesting books around about the Vietnam Era. Appy (2004) uses a similar method of compiling data by looking at the war from many different perspectives.
