their freedom from slavery. This did not mean they were ultimately free, or as free as white people in the society. The time of adjustment for the nation was a
difficult one and many had little idea of what to do with this new nation wherein African Americans were free. This applied to the white people as much as it
did to the African Americans. In Booker T. Washingtons work Up From Slavery he urged the African American to become involved in physical work and labor in order to slowly
work towards a racial and social acceptance. In all honesty this may well have not been a very good message for the African Americans in light of the fact that
it all but seemed to encourage them to allow the white society to see them as only laborers, not intelligent human beings. The following paper examines how this may not
have been the best message or path for the African Americans, but that it was a path that many newly freed slaves were perhaps more likely to understand and follow.
Booker T. Washingtons Up From Slavery Following the Civil War and the freedom of the slaves the African American people were told they were free but the society
was not really prepared to deal with this influx of people who needed to be paid for work. They were suddenly in a society that did not know how to
treat them, and they were in a society they did not know how to work within due to their lives having been lived as slaves. They clearly needed direction, or
help, from intelligent and caring people, especially African Americans who could relate to their ordeals and suffering and hopes and fears. Such an individual was Booker T. Washington.
