for the education and training of African Americans throughout the country. He was not one of the angry or bitter African American men who advocated battling against the system, but
rather a man who believed strongly that education and training could ultimately lead to equality and peace in the nation as it related to race. Many other African Americans argued
against his visions for they believed he was a man who was only encouraging the African American man, the former slave, to keep himself lower than the white man, to
simply do mundane jobs and never rise to a real level of equality in society. He was not a combative man and many other African Americans believed they needed to
fight to get ahead in society. The following paper illustrates how Washington was a man of hope, a man who offered hope in a very simple and real manner. His
dreams, although not aggressive, were very valid and were designed to give people hope, to give them a future and to give them dreams they could slowly build off of
with the end result hopefully being one of a powerful equality among men. The paper brings into play the words or thoughts of W.E.B. Dubois and Frederick Douglass as well.
Washington and Realistic Hope For many individuals it is one thing to have ideals and to struggle for those ideals their entire life, never getting ahead. For the
African American individual who had grown up in slavery and been controlled and oppressed for so long, the reality of freedom caused many to strike out against the system. Washington
