reaction to the movie. Discussion New Moon is of course the second in the hugely successful Twilight series of books by Stephanie Meyer. The first book, Twilight, introduced Bella Swan
and the boy she falls in love with, Edward Cullen. As anyone who hasnt been under a rock for the past two years knows, Edward has a secret: hes a
vampire. He and his family, all vampires, live in Forks, Washington, because it has the most rainfall, and thus the cloudiest days, of any state in the Union (Meyer). Bella
being mortal means that she will age while he remains forever 17, and much of the first book is taken up with her begging him to "turn" her. He keeps
refusing, and the first book ends with him killing another vampire who wants to harm Bella, all the while resisting her blandishments. Adult readers who get sucked into reading this
will probably be fairly creeped out by some of the implications, especially why Edward, who looks 17 but is actually over 100 years old, is interested in a 17-year old
girl. Then there are Bellas parents, who seem to regard her as an afterthought: they are divorced, her mother is unavailable and her father is entirely disinterested in her welfare.
The picture Meyer paints in fact is one of a lonely, alienated teen who is easy prey for a seducer. But instead of presenting this ugly scenario as it really
is, she makes Edward and the rest of his vampiric family exotic, mysterious and desirable, and Bella enchanted by the whole thing. Teenage girls are lapping this up; their parents
are probably going "oh yuck!" Older readers will also tire quickly of the authors descriptions of Edwards physical beauty (hes Adonis, he sparkles, etc. ad nauseam), but that weird combination
