all ages. This paper is a brief review of two such books, Holes and The Watsons Go To Birmingham. Discussion - Holes How far do curses extend? If someone is
cursed, does it go from one generation to the next? And can it ever be broken? These questions must surely occur to the readers of Holes, the Newbery Award-winning novel
by Louis Sachar. In the book, Stanley Yelnats, a teenager, is sentenced to 18 months in a youth labor camp for a crime he didnt commit. The general theme of
the book is how his experience in the camp helps him grow and become a real leader. The book is set at Camp Green Lake, where the inmates are put
to digging holes in the desert. While the warden and guards claim that the boys are put to digging holes as a way to build character, an astute reader will
immediately wonder if there is a different reason, and of course there is-the warden is looking for treasure (Sachar). The plot is difficult to describe in one paragraph because
it actually stretches back into the 1800s. One of Stanleys ancestors, Elya, failed to fulfill his promise to a gypsy with the result that the family is supposedly cursed. After
all, Stanley is in the labor camp because of a mistake, not because hes guilty of anything. As the book progresses, and the boys dig, they begin to find artifacts
in the lake, which the warden keeps for herself (Sachar). These are relics from Katherine Barlow, a schoolteacher who fell in love with Sam, who was African-American (Sachar). They
were ostracized by the town and Sam was killed, whereupon Katherine became an outlaw; she was known as "Kissing Kate" (Sachar). She hid her loot in Green Lake, which by
