the weaknesses of the Confederacy. But the essays contained in this book show a reevaluation by noted scholars. Richard Current, from the University of Wisconsin, analyzed the war making
potential of both sides using contemporary economic theory applied to the economic resources of the two regions. Current did not find that the South did an inferior job of
managing their economic affairs. Rather, the overwhelming economic superiority of the North made the outcome inevitable, in Currents view, once two obstacles were overcome. First of these was
the threat of intervention from abroad, which would help to equalize the resources. Second was that the South would by skill or luck, be able to make substantial gains
on the battlefield before the weight of Northern resources could be mobilized and brought to bear on the war effort. Neither of these two things happened, as a result,
after 1863, Current viewed the conflict as merely a war of attrition (19-20). T. Harry Williams, of Louisiana State University, used intellectual and social history to reinterpret the military campaigns
of the war. Williams evaluated the military leadership of the two sides, and noting that it was mainly a battle of West Pointers, ultimately blames the Souths loss on
Jefferson Davis inferiority to Lincoln, for he never developed an overall strategy or devised a unified command system for the entire military (45). Norman Graebner, of the University of Illinois,
reevaluated Civil War diplomacy in the context of the broader European diplomatic tradition. His thesis is that the realities of power, not the skill of Union diplomats or the
