The following paper offers up a book report of Walls work. Book Report on The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls Setting: This story takes place in many settings. It involves the mother (Rose), the father (Rex), and four children; Jeannette, her two sisters (Lori and Maureen) and her brother (Brian). In the beginning they are moving around a lot, basically doing a lot of just camping out, in many southwestern areas, living freely and clearly without roots. Yet at the same time their roots, the roots of the children, are very strongly immersed in the parents who are, as mentioned, less than conventional. The mother would far rather engage in something artistic than every really nurture her children and the father is a man who would rather give his children a star than a present. Yet, there is no doubt that the parents love the children, and the children seem to know this. So, while the setting is less than ideal for children as they are moved around a lot, the setting also provides a very unique, artistic, intelligent and free lifestyle. This setting moves, however, to West Virginia where things truly crumble. The father, who grew up in this town, seems to be immediately immersed in a dire internal reality where he has no hope, as if coming back to his hometown has rid him of any dreams, happiness, or opportunities. This has, it seems, something to do with his mother, her controlling nature, and the possibility that he was molested by her as a child. Both Rex and Rose become far less than they were and as such the children ...
