as author Kevin Toolis reveals in his compelling and deeply moving book, Rebel Hearts: Journeys Within the IRAs Soul, there is much more to the story. As most students
of history know, Northern Ireland has been in a nearly constant state of war for many years. This is usually referred to as the "troubles," because as Toolis admits,
"The exact nature of the conflict was difficult to define" (4). He quickly adds that these troubles more closely resemble acts of rebellion than they do a revolution (5).
Seeking answers to these ongoing troubles, Toolis, a British-born journalist of Irish ancestry, set out on a journey to penetrate the cloak of silence that has long surrounded the
mysterious IRA. By the late-1980s, Toolis found his way into the confidence of key IRA members, and the result is an impressively researched text that not only regurgitates startling
facts and figures but also puts names and faces to the ominous-sounding collective name of Irish Republican Army. Concentrating on the time period between the late 1960s through the
1980s, anyone it seems who ever had any connection with the IRA, whether they be informers, prisoners, exiles, or the steadfast Irish political activist organization known as Sinn Fein.
Each chapter is subdivided in such a way as to concentrate on a specific aspect of the IRA, such as "Defenders, "Brothers," "Informers" and "Volunteers." All of these threads
