States, and yet despite the fact that she continues to regarded as "virtually an American saint... the person whom many regard as the greatest American woman of the twentieth century"
(13), she remains largely an enigma. Who was Eleanor Roosevelt? J. William T. Youngs, a professor of History at Eastern Washington University, considered the many sides of this
multifaceted woman in his 1985 biography, Eleanor Roosevelt: A Personal and Public Life. Youngs did not approach his subject as an American treasure, to be admired only from a
distance. His purpose was to closely examine the life of a very private woman in order to develop a sense of not only who she was as a person,
but to also put her contributions and her legacy into a proper perspective. The book details specifics of Eleanor Roosevelts life both in and out of the spotlight, and
provides much of the information that can be found in any biography, such as dates, family background, and achievements. However, Youngs also speculates upon her thoughts, her hopes and
